Disciple Making in India

by Mar 30, 2017

I just recently had the opportunity to spend four days training pastors in India in the subject of disciple making. What an amazing four days! Many of those pastors left the training committing themselves to the priority of making disciples. The trip was a huge success!

Having returned from India, I have had the chance to reflect on a few observations from my time there. I’d like to share them with you.

Disciple making: now more than ever! The country of India is facing some major challenges. The spiritual battle there is real and people are looking for answers more than ever. The answers they are looking for are spiritual. They are looking for Jesus and multiplying disciples is the proven way to help them find Him. Like the U.S., India needs a movement of multiplying disciples now more than ever.

Disciple making: more training needed! My time in India taught me two things. First, the pastors I spent time with know very little about disciple making. We must help them learn. Second, they are hungry to learn. Unlike the U.S., the pastors in my training time stayed the whole day! They did not leave early! Some traveled as much as 10 hours by train to receive four days of training.

Disciple making: it works in every culture! When you teach in a different culture, you always hope what you are teaching translates. This was my concern going to India. Guess what? Disciple making the Jesus way fits very well in the current Indian context. Imagine that, something Jesus did 2,000 years ago still works today? Seriously, the question is whether or not we will work Christ’s plan.

My main observation from India is that people are people everywhere you go and they all need to be more like Jesus. Disciple Making is the best way I know to turn the planet into nations full of Christ followers. We need to get busy!
