God With Us

by Dec 12, 2019

Matthew 1:23 says, “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel” (which means, God with us).

The timeless truth of Christmas is that Jesus was and is, “God with us.” There is no question that Jesus entered humanity in order to make salvation possible for all of mankind. Jesus made His dwelling among people in order to make redemption for mankind possible. If the incarnation had not happened, humanity would be still be lost and in need of a savior.

A-not-so-obvious truth of Christmas is that Jesus was and is “God with us” in order to start a movement of multiplying disciples. It was not only God’s plan to send Jesus to make redemption possible, but it was His plan to make the message of redemption known by making disciples. Jesus made His dwelling among us in order to set in motion a movement of multiplying disciples. If the incarnation had not happened, only the people alive during Jesus’ lifetime would know the good news about Christ.

The story of Christmas is the story of the beginning of a movement, not just the story of a baby in a manger. Jesus came with a heart for being and building disciples. He knew what it meant to lead, and He understood how to start a movement of disciple making. Jesus is the perfect Shepherd, and the best example of a disciple making leader.

Perhaps the best response we can give to the good news of Christmas is something very different than our typical seasonal traditions. Maybe instead of giving gifts, cooking like crazy, and decorating homes & trees, we should respond to the incarnation by committing to being and building disciples. What if our response to the coming of Christ was to become a part of His movement? Perhaps the thing that would honor the Messiah most would be for His Church to become the movement He created her to be.

My prayer is that your “merry Christmas” will translate to disciple making steps this year. I can think of no better gift you could give the world around you than the good news of Jesus Christ.

Impact Discipleship Ministries exists to help you be and build disciples. We are trying our best to continue what Jesus began two thousand years ago. If we can help you become a part of His movement, please contact us and let us know how we can support you by emailing info@impactdisciples.com.
