Have you ever thought about how difficult it would be to try and fulfill the Commission of Christ without the Spirit of Christ? In fact, it is not only difficult, it is impossible. God never expected his disciples to fulfill the Great Commission without the presence of the Great Companion. The Great Companion (our counselor, our comforter, our helper) makes it possible to fulfill the mission of Jesus. This is exactly why Jesus told his disciples to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit had come.
I find it interesting that Jesus did not tell his disciples to start working on his mission and if they could not do it, then he would send His Spirit. He did not ask them to try and make things happen in their own power and then call on him when they couldn’t pull it off. Jesus did not expect his disciples to pull themselves up by their boot straps (or sandal straps) and then turn to him when they were powerless. The truth is Jesus knew they were powerless to fulfill his mission from the very beginning. This is why Jesus sent his Spirit only a short time after he had departed for heaven.
Jesus knows that still, to this day, we are powerless to fulfill his mission without his power! It is the Holy Spirit that empowers every part of the disciple making process. The Holy Spirit leads us to disconnected people. The Hoy Spirit gives us the words to say to people. The Holy Spirit draws people to Jesus. The Holy Spirit transforms a person’s life. The Holy Spirit reminds us of what Jesus taught. Clearly, disciples can only be made by the presence and power of God’s Spirit and not by human effort. Disciple Making is spiritual transformation not behavioral modification.
I say all this to encourage you to stay yielded and submissive to the Holy Spirit’s leading in your life. It is God’s will that we make disciples and it is his power that makes it happen. We simply get the honor being a part of the process God uses to change lives around us. Stay yielded to the Great Companion.
