The Making of a Disciple Making Pastor – Part 4

by Mar 29, 2018

One of my favorite leadership quotes that I’ve ever heard is, “Speed of the leader equals speed of the team.” I believe that – don’t you?

A disciple making pastor is a person who sets the pace for the church when it comes to making disciples. The disciple making pastor is a person who works the process of making disciples as well as anyone else in the organization. They do what they are asking everyone else to do.

When you have a pastor who leads toward the mission, leads themselves first, leads the organization correctly, and sets the pace, you will have a disciple making church. Let’s look at some steps you can take to become a pastor that leads the way.

#4- Lead the way! A pastor who leads the way does so by living the life he is asking others to live. In other words, he seeks to live his life as a fully trained disciple of Christ. In no way does he claim to be perfect, but such a pastor is doing everything possible to follow Christ as his model. A pastor who leads the way for others is a member, magnifier, minister, manager, messenger, multiplier, and is maturing in his faith. He does not profess to have arrived, but is pursuing what it means to be a fully trained disciple of Christ.

The second thing that a pastor who leads the way does is to lead others to live the life Christ lived. In others words, he sets the pace in helping other people move from untrained to fully trained disciples. He not only is committed to living the life of a fully trained disciple, but is also helping others do the same. The disciple making pastor leads the way in inviting people, connecting people, building people, and multiplying leaders. The disciple making pastor is an example to the whole church of what it means to lead untrained people to become fully trained disciples.

The third way a disciple making pastor leads the way is by leveraging his influence. The disciple making pastor is a leader of leaders, and models what it means to empower and mobilize more leaders. The disciple making pastor is a person that is known for multiplying more leaders for the harvest.

When a church is organized to make disciples, and it has a pastor that leads the way and sets the pace, you will see great things happen. A church that does not have a pastor leading the way in living the life, leading others, and leveraging his influence will have a difficult time fulfilling the mission of making disciples.
