The end of a passing year and the beginning of a new year is a great time to take stock of your life. An annual time of evaluation is an important way to see if you are living a purposeful life. It is a great way to see if you’ve lived your life for the right things and in the right way.
At the end of Jesus’ life, He prayed a prayer that went like this: “I glorified You on earth, having accomplished the work that You gave Me to do.” (John 17:4) I can’t think of a better way to evaluate your life. Ask yourself: “Have I accomplished the work God gave me to do? Have I glorified my Father by what I have done?”
Jesus could look back at the end of His life with confidence knowing that He lived like He was supposed to live, and He led like He was supposed to lead. Jesus glorified His Father by being a disciple and building more disciples.
One of the single most important evaluation questions for you to ask at the end of this year (and every year) is – have I lived as a disciple and made more disciples in the past year? If you have, then you have glorified God. If you have not, you might want to change some things before next year starts.
One thing I know is this: you do not want to come to the end of a year, only to look back and realize that you have not done the very thing Jesus meant for you to do with your time. If Jesus said, “Go make disciples,” and you have not made any effort toward doing so, it is time for a change.
As the new year draws near, you have a brand new opportunity to be obedient to the Great Commission of Jesus Christ. When you come to the end of next year, do your best to be able to say, “I have made a disciples of Christ.”
It doesn’t matter who you are: everyone is called to make disciples. Everyone is going to give an account for what they did with the Great Commission. It is worth evaluating, and it is worth making changes in your life.
